Giving Love Back: Why Community Support Matters at Springer’s Jewelers

Giving Tuesday offers a moment to step back and acknowledge the communities that have shaped us. As a fourth-generation, family-owned business, we have spent more than 150 years rooted in the downtowns of Bath, Portland, and Portsmouth. If there’s one thing we’ve learned in that time, it’s that a business doesn’t stand on its own, it thrives because of the people who support it.

That’s why giving back has always been part of who we are. When a community helps you make a living, contributing to its well-being is the only right answer.

Why We Give

Our approach is straightforward: we support organizations that strengthen the places we live and work. We focus on groups that reflect the values our business was built on. We care for families, access to education, support for mental and physical health, opportunities for young people, environmental stewardship, and outlets for creativity and connection.

Being Part of These Communities

Being present in coastal New England for more than a century and a half means you witness a lot — neighborhoods evolving, nonprofits expanding, and volunteers stepping in again and again for the good of their neighbors. Staying connected to our communities helps us understand what matters to the people who walk through our doors every day.

Bath, Portland, and Portsmouth all have their own personalities, histories, and needs, but the one constant we see is a deep commitment to supporting one another. That’s something we admire and want to help sustain.

The Real Work Happens Beyond Us

One thing we’re continually reminded of: the organizations doing this work deserve the credit. Local groups, whether they’re focused on food access, housing, youth programs, healthcare, or the arts, are the ones making the most meaningful, day-to-day impact.

Our role is simply to support the efforts already happening. These nonprofits, volunteers, and community leaders are the ones who drive real change, often quietly and consistently.

Community Needs We See Across the Region

Throughout Maine and New Hampshire, nonprofits continue to respond to a wide range of needs:

  • Food insecurity and access to essentials

  • Support for children, teens, and families

  • Mental and physical health resources

  • Environmental protection and trail stewardship

  • Arts, culture, and creative education

  • Housing stability and crisis support

These categories reflect the priorities of the region we call home. They also show how many people work behind the scenes to make this a better, stronger place to live.

What We’ve Observed This Year

Over the past year, we’ve seen organizations:

  • Expand programs to meet rising needs

  • Build new partnerships to extend their reach

  • Adapt creatively to challenges

  • Support community members with steady, consistent care

A Generational Value

Being a fourth-generation business means thinking long-term — about our craft, our customers, and our communities. What’s been passed down through the generations isn’t just the knowledge of fine jewelry, but the understanding that being part of a place comes with responsibility.

That responsibility hasn’t changed, even as the world around us has. This year, we were able to direct more than $100,000 toward organizations doing meaningful work in our communities.

Thank You

As we move through the holiday season, we want to say thank you for supporting us, for supporting local nonprofits, and for continuing to invest in the well-being of your communities. The strength of this region comes from the people who care about it, and we’re grateful to be part of that.

Thank you for being part of our story — and for helping us give love back where it matters most.
