Anticlastic Artistry
Sculpture Born From a Single Sheet of Metal
Anticlastic raising is a metal-forming technique where a flat sheet is shaped with a hammer over a sinusoidal (snake-like) stake. As the edges stretch and the center compresses, the metal curves in two directions at once, producing light, sculptural forms. The pattern of the sheet guides the final shape, yet many variations can emerge from the same starting piece—one of the reasons this technique is both expressive and uniquely Michael Good.
