Can Engagement Rings Be Resized?

Can Engagement Rings Be Resized?

If your engagement ring has a simple design that is free of diamonds on the band or has intricate designs, it can be resized. It’s normal for you to need to resize your engagement ring. The process is simple, yet many are not familiar with the details of how to resize an engagement ring.

How To Resize Your Engagement Ring

It is strongly recommended that you go back to the jeweler whom you bought your engagement ring from if you are looking to do a resize. If you cannot get back to the original jeweler, getting a referral from a friend or family also works as well. The main idea is to find a reputable jeweler who can handle your resizing properly. It can take roughly a week or two for your resize to come back.

How To Make An Engagement Ring Smaller

  • A measurement of your finger will be taken
  • The jeweler will cut a piece of the band to match the smaller measurements
  • They will form a perfect circle around this new size
  • The jeweler will solder the two pieces together
  • The ring will be cleaned and polished

How To Enlarge An Engagement Ring

Follows a similar process to shrinking but more material needs to be added.

  • The jeweler will take measurements of your finger
  • They will stretch the metal
  • Rings can only be stretched up to a half size up

If you need more than just a half size up, then the jeweler will:

  • Cut the band
  • Add in an extra piece of metal
  • Solder, clean, and polish the area that was added

The same applies to stretching a ring as it does with shrinking a ring. The simpler the ring, the easier it will be. If there are any diamonds on the band then they may have to be rearranged, which can cost you more time and money.

What Kinds Of Rings Can Be Resized?

If you’re looking to resize your ring, the metal needs to be easy to work with. These metals include:

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Platinum

These metals allow for resizing. Tungsten rings are too hard and are not able to be resized. Titanium rings can also be incredibly difficult to resize.

If you have an eternity band on your engagement ring, then you really can’t resize the ring. Diamonds would need to be either taken off or added, depending on if you are shrinking or widening. Bare metal is ideal in any case of resizing.
