Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Custom House stands as one of the most elegant Landmarks in the city of Portland. Designed by Alfred Mullett, it was built in the wake of the Great Fire of 1866. 1800 buildings were destroyed along with the previous custom house on Exchange Street. The new Custom House was built with fireproof New Hampshire granite and a slate-shingled hip roof.
