Evergreen is a lovely garden-style cemetery located on 239 picturesque acres in the city of Portland, Maine and is the states second largest. Established by the city in 1854, the cemetery was designed by Charles H. Howe as a rural landscape with winding carriage paths, footbridges, and ponds. Standing guard over the cemetery in all of its granite splendor is the Wilde Memorial Chapel. Wilde memorial chapel was constructed as a remembrance to Samuel Wilde, husband of Mary Ellen Wilde. She was a Falmouth native who vacationed on the Maine coast and chose Evergreen as their final resting place.
